Welcome to MEND!

MEND is a free, fun, family-based program to help BC children who are above a healthy weight and their families achieve healthier weights and improve their overall health and quality of life.

MEND is offered in these communities: Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Cranbrook, Kamloops, Kelowna, Prince George, Powell River, Nanaimo, Campbell River, North Vancouver, Saanich, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Fort St John, Maple Ridge, North Cowichan, Penticton, Agassiz, Squamish and Richmond. What is MEND?

MEND empowers families with children aged 7-13 who are above a healthy weight to become healthier by participating in twice-weekly sessions focused on healthy meal planning, goal setting, and physical activity. More play, less screen time, and improved self-esteem are some of the many benefits of MEND.

Families learn how to make healthier food choices, become more physically active, and reduce their screen time. Group sessions allow families to learn from one another, discuss and share their successes and challenges. MEND takes a non-diet approach and follows the best evidence for effectiveness in supporting families with children who have weight concerns.

Who can participate?

MEND is for children aged 7 to 13 years who are above a healthy weight and their families. At least one parent or guardian must attend the program with the child but the whole family is encouraged to attend and learn together.

What to expect:

  • Parents/caregivers join their children in each session to learn how to choose healthier foods
  • Families participate in practical demonstrations and games that offer tips about healthy eating, label reading and portion sizes
  • Physical activity sessions focus on having fun, learning new skills and being active as a family
  • Trained leaders show how small changes in lifestyle can make a big difference in the whole family’s health

The benefits of MEND:

MEND has been developed and tested by leading experts in child nutrition, child psychology and exercise. MEND helps families change their health behaviours. Research has shown that programs combining behaviour change, physical activity and healthy eating with support for families are more likely to produce long-lasting health benefits.
